China to launch new research project on giant panda protection

China is set to launch a new research project focused on the protection of giant pandas. In 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downlisted the species from "Endangered" to "Vulnerable" due to improvements in its population numbers, thanks to decades of intensive conservation efforts in China. However, the species remains vulnerable, and continued research and protection measures are essential to secure its future.
