The China Coast Guard strengthening patrols has several important implications:

1. Protecting national sovereignty and maritime rights
Territorial waters protection
China has a vast expanse of territorial waters. Strengthening patrols helps safeguard China's sovereignty over its islands, reefs, and the adjacent waters. For example, in the South China Sea, there are numerous islands and reefs that are an inalienable part of China. Coast Guard patrols can effectively prevent illegal incursions by foreign vessels into China's territorial waters around these islands and reefs.
Maritime jurisdiction enforcement
China has exclusive rights to economic activities such as fishing, oil and gas exploration in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Coast Guard patrols can monitor and regulate activities within the EEZ. They can prevent foreign fishing vessels from engaging in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in China's EEZ, ensuring the sustainable use of fishery resources.

2. Ensuring maritime security
Countering maritime crimes
Piracy and armed robbery at sea pose a threat to the safety of ships and crews. The China Coast Guard, by increasing patrols, can enhance the security of important sea lanes. For example, in the waters near the Strait of Malacca, where there have been some piracy incidents in the past, China Coast Guard cooperation and patrols contribute to the overall security of this crucial shipping route.
They can also combat other maritime crimes such as smuggling. Smuggling activities not only violate China's customs and trade regulations but may also involve the trafficking of illegal goods, including drugs and contraband. Coast Guard patrols can intercept and deter smuggling vessels, protecting China's economic and social stability.
Search and rescue operations
The vastness of the sea means that ships and aircraft may encounter distress situations. A strengthened Coast Guard with more frequent patrols can respond more quickly to distress calls. They are equipped with search and rescue facilities and trained personnel to save lives at sea. For example, in the event of a shipwreck or a missing fishing boat, the Coast Guard can launch timely search and rescue operations to minimize casualties.

3. Environmental protection
Marine pollution prevention
With the growth of global trade and shipping activities, the risk of marine pollution has increased. Strengthened Coast Guard patrols can monitor ships to ensure that they comply with environmental regulations. They can check for illegal discharges of oil, sewage, and garbage at sea. For example, by inspecting passing ships, the Coast Guard can prevent oil tankers from illegally dumping bilge water containing oil, protecting the marine ecosystem from pollution.
Protecting marine ecosystems
Coast Guard patrols can also protect important marine protected areas. In China, there are various marine nature reserves and ecological protection areas. The Coast Guard can prevent illegal activities such as illegal fishing, dredging, and land reclamation in these protected areas, which is crucial for maintaining the biodiversity and ecological balance of the marine environment.
