As of my last update in early 2023, the Chinese government has made significant strides in improving access to clean tap water in rural areas. By the end of 2021, according to official statistics from the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Rural Revitalization, the coverage rate of centralized drinking water supply in rural areas had reached 88% by the end of 2021, which is close to the 90 percent figure mentioned. This means that a large majority of people living in rural China have access to piped water systems that provide treated or safe tap water.
The Chinese government's efforts to improve water infrastructure are part of broader rural revitalization initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life in rural communities. These initiatives include investment in water treatment facilities, expansion of piped water networks, and improvement of water quality monitoring systems.
However, it is important to note that while the coverage rate is high, the quality of tap water can vary, and there may still be challenges related to maintenance, water purity, and ensuring sustainable water resources in some areas. The government continues to work on these issues to ensure that the tap water supplied to rural residents meets safety standards.
